Why Use Reusables?
Why does anyone bother to use reusable nappies when disposables exist?
Well, the first reason is that they’re really easy to use, so my question is: why would you use disposables when beautiful, soft bamboo nappies are so much nicer for your baby and better for your environment? Why spend £800-£1000 on disposables over 2 ½ - 3 years when you could spend £230 on a set of gorgeous nappies that you can keep for this baby, your next baby, your sister’s baby, your brother’s baby, your next door neighbour’s baby…. The list is endless because the nappies will last and last and last. And with each baby that they’re used for you’ve stopped 5000 nappies going to landfill. 5000 nappies for each baby.
Yes you really will change your baby’s bum around 5000 times over the next 2 ½ - 3 years! So those 5000 cheap disposables will add up to something really expensive. For you and for the landscape (think how much room 5000 individually bagged, dirty nappies take up on landfill. Per baby.) Or you can buy 20 bamboo ones and never throw them away. The choice is yours…
So if you choose reusables what do you get?
You get nappies that are soft to the touch, that will feel good for your baby (ever tried wearing paper?)
You get peace of mind knowing that what you see is what you get; the only substance next to your baby’s skin is bamboo. Try slitting open a disposable and seeing what’s inside. It’s tricky to see actually, so pour some water on it, leave it 10 minutes then look again. You’ll see loads of tiny crystals which swell up to absorb the urine, they’re chemicals basically, and once the nappy’s been on your baby for a long time they’re not just in the nappy, they’re on your baby.
You get nappies that you use in exactly the same way as a disposable. You put a nappy on your baby. 3 hours later you take that nappy off and put a clean nappy on. You put the dirty nappy in a tote bag instead of in the bin. Easy. The only extra bit is that every other day or so you pop them in the washing machine.
Flusable liners help the process, because if your baby has done a poo you can pick up the liner and flush it away down the toilet. So for the squeamish out there, it’s really not any more messy…
If you buy 20 nappies you get with them everything you need to keep your baby in nappies for the next 2-3 years (except for buying more flushable liners, you’ll need a lot so we couldn’t fit them all in the box. But they’re cheap and you can buy them from lots of different shops as well as our website).
